What are button batteries and why are they dangerous?

Button batteries are small, flat, circular batteries that look like coins or buttons. Button batteries are extremely dangerous to children as they are a choking hazard and are highly corrosive if swallowed.

They are commonly used in products such as watches, calculators, hearing aids, remote controls and children’s toys. They are typically the size of a €1 or 20c coin but can be as small as 5mm in diameter, making them easy for children to swallow.

Why are button batteries dangerous for children?

Button batteries are extremely dangerous and can cause severe and sometimes fatal injuries. Button batteries are extremely dangerous if swallowed. As well as being a choking hazard, they can react with saliva and cause severe internal burns to the throat, stomach or intestines. This chemical reaction can happen in as little as two hours and can be fatal.

How can I keep my child safe from button batteries?
  • Keep all button batteries out of reach of children
  • Check that button batteries in toys are secured in compartments that cannot be easily opened
  • Be aware that batteries in household items like decorations and remote controls may be easier to access, so keep these items away from small children
  • Store all spare and used button batteries safely and out of reach of children
  • Only buy toys from reputable businesses, as this reduces the risk of unsafe products
  • If your child swallows a button battery, or you think they may have, go to A&E immediately

What is the CCPC’s role in button battery safety?

The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) works to ensure that products sold in Ireland meet safety standards. The CCPC has recalled toys due to button battery risks.

What should you do if you find an unsafe product with button batteries?
